Can anyone provide some good winter holiday ideas for a large family with a very low budget?

We usually do the summer holidays, but next year we want to do something different and new for children. We live in the Texas area where we never see snow and we are interested in spending Christmas in a private home, cabin, which is not tourist-infested with skiers. I have no idea what people usually look for when it comes to winter vacation packages, but we would like something simple, where my nephews can come and use some store-bought or snowboarding in the hills. A place where we can spend some time outside be deprived strong as a family and come and spend some time by a chimney. Any and all ideas are welcome. Even if you know of a good place in Texas, where it really snows would be great because, as mentioned earlier, we are in a very low budget. Thank you!
