Cheapest way to get from New Jersey / New York to Los Angeles, CA?

Recently I have been reviewing fares for Christmas / New Year New '09 and prices are a lil 'out of range for me .. (minimum return package $ 400 + per person) Can anyone suggest a way transit cheaper ..? such as buses or trains ..? I have not had luck with the buses, since none of them are going cross country .. and if you suggest that travel drive .. which is like 4 days on the road in one way: s I'm not willing to spend because that will make me go to 8 days of my 10 vacation days on the road: s .. Any suggestions?
